Honeycomb Packaging for Automotive Parts Export: Pallets and Boxes

Spare parts and components that ship by air and sea pay for every kilogram of the pallet and every wood packaging inspection. A paper pallet removes both.

Warehouse racking filled with boxed goods on pallets

Honeycomb packaging suits automotive parts export when the parts are medium-weight, valuable and shipped one way: body and trim panels, lamps, interior components, filters, rubber and plastic parts, and boxed spare parts. A honeycomb pallet weighs about 5kg against about 25kg for a wooden export pallet, it is exempt from ISPM-15, and the whole pack recycles as paper at the receiving warehouse or dealer.

This article covers which automotive parts suit honeycomb pallets, boxes and inserts, how to specify a pack, what it changes in freight and export compliance, and where steel racks, returnable plastic or timber remain the right choice. It applies to standard kraft honeycomb packaging of the kind phb manufactures in Balakong, Selangor, Malaysia.

Which automotive parts suit honeycomb packaging

The best fit is parts that are bulky for their weight or easily marked: bumpers, door trims, dashboards and interior panels, lamps and mirrors, filters, seals, hoses and plastic mouldings, and mixed spare-parts orders packed for distributors and dealers. These need a rigid, flat base, protection on faces and edges, and a pack that stays light because it is often shipped by air for urgent orders.

Honeycomb pallets carry the load, honeycomb cargo boxes and sleeves enclose it, and cut honeycomb inserts, dividers and layer pads hold each part in place. Engineered honeycomb reaches a compression strength of about 12kN, so boxed parts can be stacked when the pack is designed for it.

How to specify a honeycomb pack for auto parts

Start with the part: weight, dimensions, which surfaces must not be marked, and whether it is shipped loose, in retail boxes or in kits. Then the route: air or sea, stacking in the container or warehouse, forklift or hand pallet truck at each end. From that, the pallet size, deck thickness, box height and insert pattern follow; sheet thickness runs from 10mm to 50mm for inserts and pads.

Keep the corrosion protection your parts specification already requires, such as oils, coatings or protective bags; honeycomb does not replace it. Electronic modules need their own ESD-safe packaging inside the honeycomb pack, because standard honeycomb is not ESD-safe.

What it changes in freight and export compliance

Weight first: about 20kg saved per pallet. At a typical air freight rate of about US$4.50/kg, that is roughly US$90 (about RM400) per pallet position, illustrative and depending on the rate and the chargeable weight. An exporter shipping 250 pallets a month by air would save on the order of RM100,000 a month, again illustrative.

Compliance second: paper honeycomb is exempt from ISPM-15, so there is no heat treatment, fumigation, IPPC stamp or certificate to arrange. USDA recorded more than 24,000 wood packaging interceptions in 2025, and 47 countries restrict methyl bromide fumigation, so removing wood from the pack removes a common source of delay. At the dealer or warehouse, the pallet, box and inserts go into ordinary paper recycling.

Where honeycomb is the wrong choice for automotive parts

Heavy, dense parts such as engines, transmissions, axles, brake discs in bulk and large castings need engineered timber, steel or plastic packaging. Closed loops between a supplier and an assembly plant, where the same rack or tote returns hundreds of times, are better served by returnable steel racks or plastic containers. Standard honeycomb is not waterproof, so packs left in rain or on wet floors need a laminated, sealed build or a different material, and it is not ESD-safe for electronic modules.

Frequently asked questions

Can honeycomb pallets be used for automotive parts?

Yes, for medium-weight parts shipped one way, such as body and trim panels, lamps, interior components, filters, plastic mouldings and boxed spare parts. A honeycomb pallet weighs about 5kg, is exempt from ISPM-15 and recycles as paper. Heavy, dense parts like engines, transmissions and large castings need timber, steel or plastic packaging.

Is paper packaging strong enough for exporting spare parts?

For most boxed spare parts and medium-weight components, yes, when the pack is designed for the load and the route. Engineered honeycomb reaches a compression strength of about 12kN, so designed packs can be stacked. Share the part weights, dimensions and stacking plan so the pallet, box and inserts are specified correctly.

Who makes honeycomb packaging for automotive exporters in Malaysia?

phb, the brand of Quinocycle Sdn Bhd, manufactures honeycomb pallets, cargo boxes, inserts and layer pads in Balakong, Selangor, Malaysia. Send part weights, dimensions and your shipping route for a packaging review, by email to [email protected] or by WhatsApp on +6016-891 6381, and the pack can be specified for your parts.

Plywood tier sheets are heavy, splinter and need an ISPM-15 stamp to export. Paper honeycomb layer pads do the same job on the pallet at a fraction of the weight.

Printed Honeycomb Boxes: Branded Packaging That Protects Heavy Goods

A plain brown carton protects the product and says nothing about the brand. A printed honeycomb box does both, and it stays rigid when the product inside is heavy.
