Honeycomb Board Party Backdrops and Dessert Table Displays

A backdrop that stands without a frame, cake risers that do not sag and cut-out shapes that go into paper recycling when the party is over.

Pastel envelopes, gold scissors, yarn and prints laid out on a pale wooden table

Honeycomb board works well for party backdrops and dessert table displays because one sheet is rigid enough to stand behind a table without a frame, light enough for one person to carry into a living room or function hall, easy to cut and paint at home, and recyclable as paper afterwards. Party stylists and families use it for birthdays, baby showers, engagements, Aqiqah and open-house celebrations.

This article covers what you can build for a dessert table or party corner, how to cut, decorate and stand the pieces, what it changes against plywood, foam board and hired props, and where it is the wrong material. It applies to standard kraft honeycomb board of the kind phb manufactures in Balakong, Selangor, Malaysia.

What you can build for a party backdrop and dessert table

The backdrop is the centrepiece: a single panel up to 2.4m x 1.2m, or two or three panels hinged with tape into a folding screen, painted, wallpapered or covered with a printed sheet. In front of it, honeycomb board makes cake and dessert risers, tiered stands for cupcakes and favours, a welcome board, cut-out numbers, names and shapes, and simple arches built from scored, curved board.

Thin board, 10–16mm, suits cut-out shapes and signs. Thicker board, 30–50mm, suits risers and free-standing shapes that need to carry a cake tray or stand without support.

How to cut, decorate and stand the pieces

Cut with a sharp craft knife and a steel ruler, changing blades often for clean edges; a party stylist with a CNC router can cut repeat shapes in batches. Prime the kraft face before painting so wet paint does not soak in. Wallpaper, wrapping paper, fabric and printed sheets glue on well, and the open edges can be taped or covered with ribbon.

As an illustrative example, a family planning a first birthday might cut a cloud-shaped backdrop from one 16mm sheet, add two 40mm risers for the cake and cupcakes, and stand the backdrop with two triangular rear braces glued and taped in place.

What it changes against plywood, foam board and hired props

Plywood backdrops need tools, two people and a car big enough to carry them. Foam board is light but bows across a wide panel and cannot be recycled. Hired props look the same at every party. Honeycomb board sits in between: rigid across a full sheet, light enough to move alone, and decorated to suit each theme.

After the party, pieces in good condition can be stored flat and repainted for the next event; worn pieces go into ordinary paper recycling as mono-material kraft paper instead of a bin bag of foam and plastic.

Where honeycomb is the wrong choice for party decor

Standard honeycomb board is not waterproof. Garden parties exposed to rain, poolside corners and tables with ice buckets or dripping drinks need a laminated, sealed build or another material. Keep panels away from candles, sparklers and open flame, since paper is combustible. It is not made to be sat or stood on, so do not use it for seating, steps or anything children might climb, and weight backdrops properly where children run around.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a party backdrop from honeycomb board?

Yes. A single honeycomb sheet up to 2.4m x 1.2m, or two or three panels hinged with tape, makes a rigid backdrop that stands behind a dessert table with simple rear braces. Prime and paint it, or cover it with wallpaper or a printed sheet, and recycle it as paper when you no longer need it.

Is honeycomb board strong enough for cake risers?

For an ordinary cake tray, cupcakes and party favours, a riser built from 30–50mm honeycomb board is usually stiff enough when the load sits flat across the top. Avoid point loads on a thin top sheet, keep it dry under chilled or iced items, and do not let anyone sit or stand on it.
